Contrabands and other illegal practices are highly prohibited in our country’s jail facilities, however, due to the rampant corruption in previous administrations, bringing or illegal drugs and illegal drug trade was freely allowed inside the prison.
On Sunday, authorities have confiscated several cigarette packs and dried tobacco leaves from a priest who was supposed to hold a mass inside Bohol Detention and Rehabilitation Center (BDRC).

According to BDRC Warden Felipe Montejo, the contrabands were seized in the possession of father James Darunday who regularly ministers to about 900 inmates on Sundays. When jail guards inspected the plastic container carried by Father Darunday, they found at least 50 packs of cigarette and some unprocessed tobacco leaves placed underneath the supposed biscuits.

Father Darunday said that he believed that the woman assured him that the container only includes biscuit for her husband. Although the priest could not remember the lady’s name, he was sure that she is from Calape town in Bohol.

“I was too trusting. I agreed to carry the container out of compassion, believing it [contained] just biscuits,” Darunday said in Bisaya.“It could have been worse if there were illegal drugs. Thank God, there were no drugs in it,” he added. “I would respect their decision if they would ban me. I just hope that another priest would look after the spiritual lives of the inmates,” Darunday said.“God knows I was innocent. I did it out of good motive. It was unfortunate this had happened,”the priest added.
